Did You Know? Facts about Nails.

Facts about Nail Growth and Structure.

Information on how to have beautiful, natural nails.

The primary purpose of the free edge of the nail is to protect the tip of the finger and or toe.

nail anatomy

The nail bed is attached to the bone by ligaments.

The nail root is attached at the base of the nail, under the skin and inside the mantle.

The skin that touches, overlaps and surrounds the nail is the perionychium.

The lunula is the half-moon shape at the base of the nail that appears white due to a reflection of light at the point where the nail matrix and nail bed meet.

Nails are an appendage of the skin.Nail anatomy 2

The cuticle is the loose and pliable overlapping skin around the nail.

The average growth of nails is 1/8th inch per month in adults.

Nails grow slower due to aging, winter months and or poor nutrition and tend to grow the fastest in the summer.

The growth of a new nail plate takes approximately 4 to 6 months.

Nail polish, applied correctly, can give the nail a healthy thicker appearance.

Hand massage with a good lotion will add much needed moisture to the skin and the nails, as well as, increasing circulation, blood flow, stimulation and relaxation to the hands and feet.

Over filing the nail and using too harsh of an abrasive or chemicals can thin and damage the natural nail.  Electric Files are meant to be used only on artificial nails.  Damage from electric files can harm natural nails.

In the salon, there are several quick fixes to get your nails looking great immediately, however, there is nothing better than prevention.  If you treat you natural nails with care, they will grow and be beautiful.  Regular manicures with quality tools, equipment and products is the best routine to get into if you want beautiful, natural nails.

Blow Drying Beauty Tips & Tricks

This article is the introduction to proper Blow Drying with Tips & Tricks.   This can be used as a reference and not to be a replacement of you own professional stylist.  By following these steps in sequence and you should have excellent results.

Have you ever blow dried you hair and ended up with a frizzy, hot mess?

Let's start at the beginning , and do the prep the proper way!

The Shampoo- The First Thing.

  1. The first thing is to start with a good shampoo, such as CHI Infra.  Dampen the hair with warm water, apply a nickle to quarter size dollop of shampoo to your hands, work through the hair.  Follow by massaging the scalp, to increase circulation, and feed the hair shaft, lather  & then rinse well.  Repeat if needed. Proceed to the next step....

STOP! Before proceeding, you must remove excessive water!

2.  Remove excessive water by towel blotting before apply conditioner. Why?  What is the Reason?  If too much moisture is left in hair it will dilute the conditioner! Therefore, your conditioner will be inactive.  The next step is conditioning.

Conditioning is a must.

3.  Conditioning  is important to smooth down and seal the cuticle. Use the proper blend for you hair type.  Apply first to the mid-shaft and ends, and then what is left over apply near the scalp.  The ends of the hair has been around longer and therefore need more conditioning. Conditioning is a must! Use only a small amount, usually around a dime to nickle size, work through and leave on for 3 - 5 minutes.  It take this long for the cuticle of the hair shaft to close down, resulting in those silky locks. Rinse, Rinse, Rinse using a warm water, making sure to remove all product. Left over product will result in the effect of dull, heavy, hair that will easily attract dust, dirt and other pollutants.

Product Selection.

4.  Proper product selection will help you achieve desired effect.   Apply selected styling products, comb through the hair gently. When blow drying the hair, it is important to be gentle.  Use a brush that is designed for blow drying such as an anti-static vent brush, and finish with a boar bristle or thermal brush for fine tuning the style.

Smooth the Cuticle

5. Finally - Section the hair. Sectioning  into easy to manage partings, with your dryer on medium heat and medium air flow. Start at the scalp area and work down the shaft towards the ends of the hair, do not rough up the cuticle.  Smooth the hair into the direction and the shape you prefer it to go. Remember to be gentle, and when you get your hair into the shape you like then cool the heat down to "Set" the style.

The Finish

5.  Follow with you curling iron, flat iron or other thermal tools if needed. In addition remember to use a thermal product to protect your hair from the excessive heat that these new tools generate.

Anatomy of Hair 4

I would like to emphasize that hair is made of fiber, and fiber is delicate.  You must be gentle to be effective and select the proper blend of styling products for your hair type. The right shampoo, conditioner, styling products, and tools will make your styling much easier. In conclusion, by being more effective, and less aggressive on the hair, you will achieve beautiful results.  Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

My Favorite Styling Products and Why.

What are my favorite products?  Starting with CHI Infra Shampoo, because it is gentle enough to use every day and you must start with clean hair! pH balanced to help cleanse your hair without over-stripping it and removing your beautiful hair color.

Infra Treatment Conditioner by CHI,  has vital nutrients, lipids and silk to sooth and condition the hair without weighing it down. Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of a great hair conditioner.

Silk Infusion Serum, smooths and de-tangles with added protein to strengthen the hair fiber.

Before you curl or straighten you must use my favorite - Quick Curl Thermal Spray, it starches the hair slightly, resulting in better curl retention.

Finally a soft/medium hold product such as Aquage defining gel.

These are just a few of the wonderful products we have at Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy.  We can help you in selecting the proper blend of products just for your hair styling needs. It's always important to custom blend for your own specific needs.  This is the reason I'm here, to help you with your hair and beauty issues.

Tips for the Perfect Haircut and Style

Advice for Clients when selecting a

New Style.

When a client goes to a salon, they expect to get the look they have always wanted.  Then, why is it, that sometimes it's great and other times it's just ok?

Have you ever left the salon with a look that you feel is totally different than what you asked for?

Did you feel like you were rushed through and that no one listened to you? Did you feel like the stylist talked you into something that they wanted instead of what you asked for?  Or did you leave the salon looking great but when you tried to duplicate it at home nothing would work. Well these are all communication breakdowns.  If you have a stylist that fails to listen, then you have a problem.

When you see someone with a style that you think looks great on them don't be afraid to ask them the name of their stylist.  Friends, relatives, and co-workers are also a good source  for recommendations when choosing a stylist.

Communication is the Key.

Here are a few tips to better communicate with your stylist.

1.  Photographs.  Yes, plain old fashioned printed photos or pictures.  Take your stylist several photos, and then discuss possible options.

Salons are full of magazines and styling guides for reference. If you bring along a picture from home or select one from an in-house pictorial, you're more likely to get just what you want. Be reasonable. Not all cuts and styles may work with your hair texture and some can accentuate facial flaws. The best insurance is to bring along a few pictures and ask the professional for advice.

Your stylist should ask you a series of questions regarding the pictures, she/he should discuss with you front view, top, back and side views.  They should ask about what you find most appealing about the picture.  If you have several pictures you can select part from one and part from another, make sure the stylist understands what parts you feel are most appealing. Don't be afraid to tell them what you like and what you do not want.   They should discuss with you Your hair and how it compares to the hair in the photo.

2.  Ask Questions.  With modern technology, any look is possible.  But, do you have the time, energy, and money to maintain this look?  Ask the stylist what is involved in achieving this look?  How much time will be invested, today for the service and to style it each day?  How easy will it be to style?  Is this something I can do at home?  How often will I need to come back to the salon to maintain this look? What products and tools will be needed?  And the biggest question....How much will it cost to achieve, and how much to maintain.

3.  Be realistic.  If you select a picture that is similar in length, texture and color to what you already have then it should be a very realistic look to achieve easily, however, if you select a total turn around, and go to very extreme style or color from what you already have, this may take a lot of time and effort to accomplish, and may even have to be done in a series of treatments.

4.  Consultation.  As I said earlier, ask questions.  Now is the time to really consult with your stylist. Communication is the key.  Make sure your stylist is listening to you and that you listen to her.  Once you feel that you that you and your stylist understand each other then you can begin the service. I always recommend a shampoo, style and finish with a style change. This ensures that the hair will work for the client when they get home.  As a Stylist, myself, when I style my client's hair I can tell if it will style easily or if it may need some added help with a special product or support service to make their life a little easier when they get home.

5.  Styling Advice.  Watch as the stylist blow drys and styles your hair.  What products are they using?  What type of brush?  What size of curling iron?  Ask questions about this part of the service as it is performed and he/she will be happy to help you with professional insight on how to achieve this look at home.

6.  At Home Maintenance.  This is a big issue.  A lot of time clients feel that they cannot achieve the look when they get home.  There is a big difference in quality of hair products, tools, irons and even blow dryers.  Ask your stylist what they are using on you and why?  Most salons carry support products for at home use, it is to your advantage to use these if you truly want to duplicate the look.

7.  Pre-book your next appointment.  YES, this is important.  If you really want to keep your look, looking great, reschedule your maintenance appointment.  This saves you and your stylist precious time and frustration, your stylist can be ready for you with a plan in place, you can discuss the results of the last style, adjust it where needed and enjoy a most beautiful result.

What happens if I'm still not happy?

There are times when you're just not happy with the cut. If you are aware of this before you leave the salon, make it known. If the salon is not busy, this may be able to be corrected then and there. If you feel rushed, tell the stylist and let him or her know that you may be in touch soon. If you discover that the haircut is not to your liking after you get home, make another appointment to follow up. After all, you wanted to look better, right? The best way to do this is communicate with the professional.

Remember, don't ever get your hair cut right before a special event. You will need some time to get used to it and make any adjustments if it turns out bad. Professional stylists want to make you, the client, happy and communication is a two way street and it take both parties to communicate effectively.

Hot Product

Quick Curl....

What can we say about this product?  We use it on almost every client that walks in the door!

Quick Curl  is a wonderful styling aid used to protect the hair from any heat appliance, blow dryer, hood dryer, curling iron, flat iron, hot rollers, & even pin curls for those "new retro looks".  It gives you added styling control with a little extra "starch" to help hold the look in place until it fully cools.  This helps ensure that the style stays longer, stronger and better.  You can add extra volume to the hair by spraying it at the base or "root area" of the hair before you blow dry or you can get simple end curls and flips by just adding it to the hair ends.   It is an all purpose styling tool that works on all types of hair!   WE LOVE, LOVE, LOVE QUICK CURL!
