HOW TO – Achieve the Perfect Brows

BEAUTIFUL, WELL SHAPED  BROWS ARE IN.

brow guidelines

What can we say about Eye Brows?   Would you put a cheap frame around a beautiful masterpiece?   Of course not!   The Eye brows  frame  your eyes.  Keep the eyebrows clean, simple and elegant with just a few simple steps.

SO, WHERE DO I BEGIN?

Cosmetology professionals are well trained in how to shape the brow in the perfect way for your particular face shape.  There are many considerations to be made when shaping your brows, for instance...If you have a larger bone structure - a thicker, heavier brow is needed...if you are petite and delicate, a thinner, finer brow shape may be needed.  BALANCE IS KEY!   Always seek the advice of a trained professional in selecting the perfect shaped brow for you.

Most women get their eyebrows waxed, plucked, threaded, or shaped, again it is best to seek the advice of a pro, but here are a few tips to accent your brows.   An extra way to add a little shape to your face is to fill in your brows with a brow powder or pencil or even a stain.  This is especially important if your brows are sparse or fair.

brow color

Use a small, stiff, angled brush to add definition to the brow with a powder brow color.  If you use a brow pencil, you can use this same style of brush to soften the lines made by the pencil. I prefer the brow powder over a pencil, but sometimes both are needed if your brows are extremely thin.  When using the pencil, make short, small strokes the same direction as your brows grow.  (You are trying to simulate the actual eyebrow hair).  Find a brow powder that matches the color of your hair.  Or, if you are a very light blonde, go a couple of shades deeper for added definition. Redheads sometimes have a hard time finding a reddish-brown brow powder, but there is a wider selection of colors available in eye shadows that can double as a brow powder. Just make sure the eye shadow is a matte shade and doesn't have any shimmer to it. Follow with a small amount of clear brow setting gel or spray on your brow brush to keep your brows in shape all day long.

makeupbrushes

Keep a brow brush in your makeup bag. The perfect brush tool has angled, stiff bristles that are short and will allow you to brush the powder right into your brows. When you add the step of filling your brows with powder to your makeup routine, you'll be amazed at how extra polished and professional your makeup will look.

Ask a Stylist- Frizz Free Curls

Curls are Divine, but Frizz is Not Fabulous.

Curly Curls, Natural Curls, Curls for Girls, Beachy Waves, Volume Curls, Spiral Curls, Rope Perms, Wand Curls, Flat Iron Curls....the list goes on and on.

So, what is the key to having beautiful curls with out the frizz?    Do you want no frizz hair?  Then you need -Proper Home Maintenance. It goes way beyond a simple shampoo and conditioner. When the heat rises, and the humidity is off the scale, you can almost guarantee that you will have a Bad Hair Day. If you don't select your products wisely your hair could be a disaster.

With so many products and tools out there, how can you decide what is perfect for you?

Ask your stylist!  Yes, I said ask your stylist.  Beautiful hair is our job.  Stylists who are serious about their career are willing to stay up to date with the most current products, trends, ingredients and regimes to help your hair look its best at all times.

Hair is fiber.  It behaves like fiber, some hair is soft and silky, and other hair may be rough and coarse.  That doesn't mean one is better than the other, it simply means different hair types will perform differently. For example, when you want your soft hair to hold curl, you have to starch or stiffen it, but if you stiffen it too much it becomes stiff and crunchy, no one wants stiff, crunchy hair.  This is where pliant strength comes in. The trick is to get the fiber to perform the way you want it to.

Pliant strength is a gage on how easily the hair can bend; how flexible supple and adaptable the hair is.

How much conditioner is needed?  If you are using a quality product, you only need a small amount.  After you shampoo and rinse well, towel blot the hair to get the excess water out, then add the conditioner, comb through and leave on 3-5 minutes, it takes that long for the cuticle of the hair shaft to close down again, and this will help to keep the frizz down.  There is no such thing as an instant conditioner.  Rinse out, and then apply your styling product, comb through and style as desired.

Product cocktailing is an excellent way to build your pliant strength without overdoing it.  Selecting the right cocktail for your hair type will make your hair smooth, bouncy and frizz free.

Selection of Professional Hair Care Products

With so many products out there in the market place today, it is really hard to keep up with all of them. It is so very important to keep the hair in the best condition possible, especially with all of the new fun color trends, that can really take a toll on the condition of the hair.  I, as a professional stylist, personally recommend working with one product line at a time until you know all of the ups and downs of the line, the ingredients, how they perform and what type of product works best with the specific hair type.

Blow Drying Beauty Tips & Tricks

This article is the introduction to proper Blow Drying with Tips & Tricks.   This can be used as a reference and not to be a replacement of you own professional stylist.  By following these steps in sequence and you should have excellent results.

Have you ever blow dried you hair and ended up with a frizzy, hot mess?

Let's start at the beginning , and do the prep the proper way!

The Shampoo- The First Thing.

  1. The first thing is to start with a good shampoo, such as CHI Infra.  Dampen the hair with warm water, apply a nickle to quarter size dollop of shampoo to your hands, work through the hair.  Follow by massaging the scalp, to increase circulation, and feed the hair shaft, lather  & then rinse well.  Repeat if needed. Proceed to the next step....

STOP! Before proceeding, you must remove excessive water!

2.  Remove excessive water by towel blotting before apply conditioner. Why?  What is the Reason?  If too much moisture is left in hair it will dilute the conditioner! Therefore, your conditioner will be inactive.  The next step is conditioning.

Conditioning is a must.

3.  Conditioning  is important to smooth down and seal the cuticle. Use the proper blend for you hair type.  Apply first to the mid-shaft and ends, and then what is left over apply near the scalp.  The ends of the hair has been around longer and therefore need more conditioning. Conditioning is a must! Use only a small amount, usually around a dime to nickle size, work through and leave on for 3 - 5 minutes.  It take this long for the cuticle of the hair shaft to close down, resulting in those silky locks. Rinse, Rinse, Rinse using a warm water, making sure to remove all product. Left over product will result in the effect of dull, heavy, hair that will easily attract dust, dirt and other pollutants.

Product Selection.

4.  Proper product selection will help you achieve desired effect.   Apply selected styling products, comb through the hair gently. When blow drying the hair, it is important to be gentle.  Use a brush that is designed for blow drying such as an anti-static vent brush, and finish with a boar bristle or thermal brush for fine tuning the style.

Smooth the Cuticle

5. Finally - Section the hair. Sectioning  into easy to manage partings, with your dryer on medium heat and medium air flow. Start at the scalp area and work down the shaft towards the ends of the hair, do not rough up the cuticle.  Smooth the hair into the direction and the shape you prefer it to go. Remember to be gentle, and when you get your hair into the shape you like then cool the heat down to "Set" the style.

The Finish

5.  Follow with you curling iron, flat iron or other thermal tools if needed. In addition remember to use a thermal product to protect your hair from the excessive heat that these new tools generate.

Anatomy of Hair 4

I would like to emphasize that hair is made of fiber, and fiber is delicate.  You must be gentle to be effective and select the proper blend of styling products for your hair type. The right shampoo, conditioner, styling products, and tools will make your styling much easier. In conclusion, by being more effective, and less aggressive on the hair, you will achieve beautiful results.  Feel free to give me a call if you have any questions.

My Favorite Styling Products and Why.

What are my favorite products?  Starting with CHI Infra Shampoo, because it is gentle enough to use every day and you must start with clean hair! pH balanced to help cleanse your hair without over-stripping it and removing your beautiful hair color.

Infra Treatment Conditioner by CHI,  has vital nutrients, lipids and silk to sooth and condition the hair without weighing it down. Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of a great hair conditioner.

Silk Infusion Serum, smooths and de-tangles with added protein to strengthen the hair fiber.

Before you curl or straighten you must use my favorite - Quick Curl Thermal Spray, it starches the hair slightly, resulting in better curl retention.

Finally a soft/medium hold product such as Aquage defining gel.

These are just a few of the wonderful products we have at Penny Miller Cosmetology Academy.  We can help you in selecting the proper blend of products just for your hair styling needs. It's always important to custom blend for your own specific needs.  This is the reason I'm here, to help you with your hair and beauty issues.
